I just finished watching this on Amazon Video Rental--and it makes me want to read the book even more now, than I did before I knew the movie existed!

Even at that early age, I didn't know why, it just felt like a good story.
It would most probably be classed as a costume drama. Would highly recommend.
She never had to talk to me about the love of books because she simply exuded it and I absorbed it.She would have loved this movie. So clever how they made a film based on a book of letters and Anne Bancroft completely captures the bright energy of Helene Hanff and Anthony Hopkins plays a gentle and charming Frank.
It isn't because of Bancroft's or Hopkins' performances--they are both excellent at their craft, and give fine performances. Super! I haven't read the book that this film was based on but it's on my list to buy.

I almost even loved it myself, because "84 Charing Cross Road" is a movie made for people who love London and books. Having much enjoyed the book, reading it twice right off, I wondered if the film would dissapoint as it so often does when adapted for the screen, but no! The idea of pen pals across the pond rather than emails, texts, or skyping each other - even though they had telephones; But I liked how the narrative maintained the tradition of writing via post, seems even more romantic for people watching this film in the 21st century.

I read the book and I saw the play and now I am reviewing the movie, and I still don't think the basic idea is sound.The story begins in the years right after World War II, when London was still gripped by food rationing and pocked by bomb craters.There is not a lot of drama in this story.
Fix that. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Many events prevent Bancroft from meeting Hopkins in the flesh but it is a lovely film.
