This Lives of Others is a brilliant film, it shows how the East German security service commonly known as the Stasi, kept the citizens of the DDR under observation in various ways, for example by bugging apartments, phones and reading the mail of "undesirable" elliments, indeed the East Germans relied on informants, both paid and unpaid to spy on their family, friends and aquaintances and in "The Lives of Others" one of these informants commits suicide by stepping into the path of an on comming truck, fearining that her betrayal would be reveald.A Film that Grips from First to Last - Totally CompellingReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 31, 2015 The English sub-titles are very, very poor. Its internal security service, the Stasi, is used to suppress those described early on in the film as the "enemies of socialism" - basically anyone who speaks out or acts against the all pervading, state-imposed, left-wing, politically-correct orthodoxy of the time. This film is based on an interesting idea, but is too long, slow, visually drab and depressing.
I don't recommend looking up serious reviews, you will find no satisfaction in reading about the plot or the awards that have been received.
The real surprise is in the film itself, it's like watching a good play in the theatre, it reaches out and grabs you, the beauty of human art can be mesmerizing and the Lives of Others is just that. So glad I did. A decent replacement copy should be offered. ... The West is not the land of milk and honey many believe it is or were lead to believe it was before the reunification of Germany. Extremely disappointed. I watched it twice in 48 hrs, & although I was profoundly moved by the first viewing, the second made even more of an impact, revealing nuances I hadnot fully appreciated originally. There is truth though in a statement near the end of the movie about many will regret the changes after reunification. My wife has seen this movie previously when the subtitles were perfectly ok. The English sub-titles are very, very poor.
