As of April 2020, John Tyler remains the only president to never have been portrayed in the media. 'Twas ever thus. One of the reasons I say so is because of the great screen writing by Mr. Sorkin. Michael Douglas has never been better, he is perfect as the president, that can also be said for the rest of the cast who all shine and each have their own moment in the film. A tour de force supporting cast of unquestionable professional acting genius that take a perfectly tailored script to a bang-up conclusion that will leave you happy and satisfied Michael Douglas and Annette Bening have real chemistry as the widowed president and the political lobbyist with whom he falls in love. Written by Aaron Sorkin the movie is a fast paced political drama and love story about Douglas’ president who is a widower and meets Bening who is an environmental lobby. However, love doesn’t run smoothly with the opposition party attacking his character as well as his girlfriends. Otherwise, just enjoy this film. West Wing addicts will feel right at home with Douglas's liberal president fighting the machinations of the Republican opposition over a range of familiar issues, like the environment and gun control. I was prepared to buy a multi-region machine to be able to enjoy this movie in HD but no need as despite Amazon's specs for this disc it does appear to be region free. The president has to break off to go and drop a few bombs. The president sends his family abroad but his grandson wants to stay with his grandfather. There are loads of other reviews saying how great this film is but I just thought I'd say that I bought this from Moviemars via Amazon and it plays perfectly on my old region B UK Panasonic BD50 player. In both the movie and the TV show there are many characters that you grow to like. Having loved the West Wing and being intrigued by American politics ... Unfortunetly, his desire to keep his job (who doesn't have that these days) soon interfears with all that high regard and respect stuff and the White House staff find themselves on shakey grounds. Yet, it gets my vote because of the brilliance of it.
Though a deal is struck, both characters have a lot of work ahead of them and will have their character and marols tested along the way. Good performance from Mr Douglas and a few funny moments make this watchable. I watch it quite often, and I particularly like the scene where the President is walking through the White House pondering a problem and he passes the paintings of the previous incumbents, there is something quite poignant and lonely in that scene that is truly fascinating. Maybe it's the President that Michael Douglas portrays. The script was amazing in my humble opinion. Not great but not bad. There's something about this movie that gets to me. I'd like to say the acting was wonderful and I do so love a great romantic comedy.
